Project Overview
The Air Force Academy Cemetery in Colorado Springs needed a bell system that could provide consistent sound coverage across their expansive grounds. The challenge was that visitors on the far side of the cemetery couldn't hear the real bells clearly from their position on one edge of the property.
Project Execution
Chime Master developed an innovative hybrid system using both real bells and electronic augmentation. A 25-bell carillon was installed on one edge of the cemetery, while a precisely calibrated speaker system was mounted on the memorial building.
The system was designed for what Jeff Crook calls "a seamless transition”–as visitors walk through the cemetery, they start out hearing the real bells and then transition to the electronic ones without noticing the change. To achieve this perfect match, Chime Master sampled their bells and made sure the samples matched up with the real thing.
For security reasons, we implemented a dedicated remote access system with a wireless modem card that operates independently of the Air Force Academy's computer network, addressing their understandable concerns about external system access.
Results
The cemetery now features consistent, high-quality bell sounds throughout the grounds, enhancing the solemnity and dignity of the space. The seamless transition between real and electronic bells creates a unified auditory experience for visitors regardless of their location within the cemetery.
