Project Overview
First Source Bank, one of the prominent financial institutions in South Bend (where Notre Dame is located), contacted us about restoring their historic post clock. The clock, dating back to around 1915, is housed in the atrium between the bank's office building and an adjoining Hyatt Regency Hotel. This impressive timepiece hadn't worked in years, with the hands frozen at 4:20 for at least five years.
Project Execution
The clock features what we call a "giant post clock”–a design typically found outdoors. It consists of a pedestal resembling the cast iron base for an old-fashioned street lamp–a big, ornate cast iron structure topped with a big ball with four faces. Originally positioned in front of the bank's old location, it was later moved indoors as an architectural feature when they built their new headquarters.
Our restoration included installing new faces, drives, a controller, and LED lighting. The work required building scaffolding to reach the faces, which are positioned 15-17 feet above the ground. Throughout the project, hotel guests and bank employees frequently stopped to ask questions and express excitement about seeing the clock working again.
"This was an interesting project to work on because the folks from the hotel and the people who have worked at the bank for years would stop and say, ‘Is this clock actually going to work?’ When we told them we'd have it running by the end of the day, they said, ‘Wow, it’s been showing 4:20 for the past five years!’”
Results
The historic timepiece now functions perfectly and serves as a stunning centerpiece in the atrium, situated prominently near the hotel's Starbucks. The LED lighting system highlights the clock's ornate details, making it a focal point for visitors and employees alike.
